A Post for October 31

October 31 means different things to different people.

To some, October 31 is part of the Christian liturgical calender: All Hallows Eve. All Hallows Eve is the day before All Saint Day, the day dedicated to all saints (both known and unknown), as well as the martyrs and other faithful departed believers. As the nightly vigil before All Saint’s Day, All Hallows Eve constitutes the first day of Hallowmas. Perhaps early celebrations introduced such traditions as Soul Cake (and therefore Terry Pratchett’s Soul Cake Duck) and the celebration of the French danse macabre, reminding churchgoers of the end of all worldly things. These traditions changed with the Protestant Reformation, with some denominations condemning all associations with All Hallows Eve due to its “popish” customs and other denominations incorporating aspects of the day into a time of solemn reflection. Today, many American denominations consider October 31 to be a day of evil, associated with pagan harvest festivals and celebrations.

Others consider October 31 a day of joviality. It is a day to dress up (or down), act out of character, and collect candy. They decorate their homes and costume their families and carry on traditions like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, or watching scary movies. Growing up, I always watched Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas. Today, that selection has been expanded to include episodes from Doctor Who, especially the “scary” or “thriller” episodes like “Don’t Blink,” “Time of Angels,” and “The Impossible Planet/Satan Pit” story line. Perhaps this year we will include “Hide” in the lineup.

These are the words of the Beast. And he has woken. He is the heart that beats in the darkness. He is the blood that will never cease. And now he will rise. We are the Legion of the Beast. The Legion shall be many, and the Legion shall be few. He has woven himself in the fabric of your life since the dawn of time. Some may call him Abaddon. Some may call him Kroptor. Some may call him Satan, or Lucifer, or the Bringer of Despair, the Deathless Prince, the Bringer of Night. These are the words that shall set him free: I shall become manifest. I shall walk in might. My Legions shall swarm across the worlds. I am the sin and the temptation and the desire. I am the pain and the loss and I have been imprisoned for eternity. But, no more. The Pit is open. And I am free.

These are some of the most terrifying words in the entire Doctor Who series . . .

But to me, October 31 will always be first and foremost Reformation Day: the day that Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses in Wittenberg Germany protesting the Catholic practice of selling indulgences and – unintentionally – providing the impetus for the Protestant Reformation. Although the Reformation resulted in the German Wars of Religion, the Catholic Counter-Reformation, and an expansion of the Inquisition, the Reformation also brought with it a spiritual freedom not seen on a large scale since the time of Constantine. In addition, the Reformation compelled the Northern Renaissance to focus on spiritual matters rather than the humanism of the late Italian Renaissance, giving us artists like Albrecht Dürer and Jan van Eyck. The Reformation is so pivotal to human history that we use it to divide the world between the Medieval and the Modern ages.

Whatever your penchant, I pray this October 31 finds you safe, happy, and healthy. After all, this day has something for everyone.

From the Spam Folder

The other day I was cleaning my spam folder here on WordPress. Some were just too bizarre; I had to share them. Enjoy.

Better Toaster Ovens

In response to my Banned Books Week article on censorship:

When our trustworthy, cheap, Black and Decker toaster oven started spewing smoke out of itss aspect, we began a pursuit of a thing that would match on our cramped counter. There were several options so we plumped forr a brand new Breviloe iterm hoping that the price might somehow be ratioalized garnering any constantly substantial reviews.

A bit costly, but you get what you pay for. It is a great-looking toaster oven having a large amount of functions. Peple instantly realize that this iis simply not just any toaster. The straightforward program and complete, in conjunction with flawlessly done bagels, gets the product 5 stars. BUT, unlike many cheaper toaster cookers I have owned, the Mini’s stand does NOT slide-out whenever you open the doorway. So be careful removing warm food in the stove, or possess a box handle nearby. In my own e-book, this subtracts a celebrity.

best toaster ovens

I should have obtained the Breville years ago in the place of losing income on these cheap toaster ovens that you just exchange over and over. It toasts, makes, broils, does anything wonderful. Plus it looks great within my home. The tiny sensible oven doesn’t occupy too much counter room (I used to have a toaster andd a toaster oven, now one great appliance does everything) despite the fact that I have a galley NYC home. I purchased an additional line rack so I may use two levels at once. I really like the ‘a bit more’ key inn the
event that you just want anything toasted or heated somewhat more.

When our aged Oster toaster oven gave out I needed to discover another toaser would fit into that place. This is one of many few thaat could do so, but there have been no opinions nonetheless forr thus design and all the warnings about how hhot these things can get on the outside sounded scary. In the long run, this is exactly what I ordered, and I am happly with it.

It generally does not get any sexier compared to the aged one did. In fact, it appears cooler. It is notably smaller as opposed to one I had before, but it satisfies the pans from my old one and the interior place is fine foor that issues I put in it: many pieces of solid toast, sausages, and so forth. Since I have a gas range with the oven ttoo I don’t cook complete roasts or anything like this in the toaster oven. The heat and period settings on this unit actually work (instead of just being fully a ticking countdown timer like my old toaster oven), and they’re easy to see and recognize, therefore I haven’t burnt such a thing yet. It is actually fairly, at the very least I think.

delonghi toaster oven replacement trays

It understands exactly how long to accomplish it depending on if it is toasting, baking, etc. The settings are simple to manage and work great. I do not find the beeping noise that looks if the range is done preheating and if it is done cooking also loud or troublesome at all as some evaluators have created. I never compose testimonials, but that is hands down better-than any
toaster oven I have ever owned. It’s worth the expense.

I argued betwee the Compact and the Mini. I needed a toaster that I coulld puut onn my microwave. I had been a little worried the degree of the Mini might be too much. It didn’t help the product overview states the dimensions of the Mini as BOTH 16x13x9 inches and 15.5x14x8.8 inches? The Mini happens to be smaller than expected, because the door handle added ~2 inches. With that at heart, the really impact is closer to 15.5×10.75 inches( Height 8.5 inches).

NFL Jerseys

In response to There is Something in Octotber

Receive Articles like this one direct to your email box!Subscribe for free today! In the National football league, I have many idols and they are the legendary players in the history of NFL. I am inspired and attracted by their brilliant team spirit and performances. They are the hero in my heart, look at them; I can feel more powerful and strong. I try my best to support them by wearing the NFL jerseys. But I think I get more benefits from the game and the great players. Yes, they give me the courage to struggle for what I aspire for just like them. They also teach me not to give whatever situation you encounter. Tom Brady is one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL). He is the hero of Patriots and the hero of America. I have a lot of his NFL jersey. However, besides Patriots jerseys, I have a lot of other team jerseys such as the Titans jerseys (I like running back Chris Johnson), Browns jerseys and Bengals jerseys. With the NFL jersey, I always hope I can play as good as my idols. The jerseys give me spirit strength to perform better in my life. However, now I can afford to buy so many expensive jerseys I like due to the financial problem. So I buy cheap NFL jersey. Cheap NFL jerseys sometimes are not as good as the new authentic jerseys. But I should survive in different condition. I should compromise at difficult time. So I made some effort to look for the good way to buy the authentic football jerseys There are so many ways for you; you just need to pay more attention to the cheap jerseys with high quality. Sometimes there will be a discount in the festive or may be the shop need to be closed. Sometimes it is time for the latest jerseys to enter the market and jerseys manufactured last year may be quite cheap. Also we can buy cheap NFL jerseys from online shop. Online shops do not need to afford the store rent. So we can buy quite cheap NFL jerseys from them. If you also adore one of the players in the NFL, buy yourself a NFL jersey. It will make you more close to your heroes and better learn from them.

Hopefully by now you know a bit more about what it takes to make an NFL pick, and what the NFL lines actually mean. Betting on sports is never easy, and that holds true for both college and pro football. Most fans who place the occasional bet or pick on the league don’t even really know what they’re doing, and this is a sure way to lose your money. However, with the right information and knowledge on your side, you can make the right calls consistently.

The third arc is less personified but it still interesting that Death The Kid is investigating what his father has to do with Eibon, as he believes there is some conspiracy that his father is not willing to say to anyone. Death says to his trusted followers not to breathe a word that they have a magic tool look in their safe or mention about Eibon, and the fact that he brings in a known inventor from Oceania named Joe Buttataki doesn’t help DTK’s thoughts that there is something suspicious. He even considers to leave the battle with Mosquito’s during the visual flashback sequence during the magnetic field battle when he seeing Eibon go in one direction and see what he’s up to.

The sad thing is that there are a lot of buyers who do not care enough about actually examining the item before they make a purchase. Because the crooks come up with a really good tactic in copying the real Gucci sunglass, many are fooled, pay for the price of an authentic Gucci, and receive a fakie. To avoid this from happening to you, we’ve listed down some tips which you might want to consider to spot a pair of fake Gucci sunglasses.

Acquiring a health and fitness buddy can motivate you to continue to keep performing out. By acquiring another person to do the job out with, you can have another person to communicate to, cling out with, and keep your self accountable to. You are less very likely to skip out on a exercise routine if you are meant to meet anyone there.

Not only are they cozy, but very comfortable, too. Ugg Boots fit like a second skin. And, the comfort is really why people keep wearing them. OK, well last week it was all about how to afford a husband, courtesy of my new book by the same title which was released last Monday. And your tips on how you all afford your husbands were many and varied, ranging from detailed percentage of income equations, through banning the purchase of electronic equipment, to keeping separate finances and the alternative suggestion to: single, be happy, keep your money and what is yours. A bit of something for everyone!.

There was some hubbub not too long ago about people not buying PCs or laptops because they’d bought iPads or wanted to buy an iPad. At the time, I disagreed and said that it was because PC hardware had gotten overly powerful and that people didn’t see a need to upgrade. Either the sound effects are translated causing the English equivalent to look out of place or take up too much space; or the effects are untranslated and maybe there is an index of their meanings in the back of the book. Vertical goes both routes here to great success that never distracts and always enhances the reading experience. The sound effects are left untranslated but in small print next to the effect is an English translation that never feels out of place.

Around the World in 14 Years

Let’s get one thing straight: circumnavigation isn’t easy.

Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition took 3 years to sail around the world; the man himself killed due to his own arrogance and ineptitude in the Philippines. Likewise, Francis Drake spent 3 years and 3 months trying to prove “anything a Portuguese sailing for Spain can do, an Englishman can do better,” failing only because of his secret mission to find the Atlantis of the Sands in the Rub’ al Khali for Queen Elizabeth the First. Wait. Strike that. Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series is about as accurate as Wikipedia, albeit far more interesting. What is certain is that these men faced challenges like no other: uncertain winds, brutal climates, and native peoples. Add to these the “normal” threats of mutiny, debilitating disease, and the very real possibility of starvation, and going once around the world was no picnic by half.

Modern circumnavigators have it no easier.

In 2002, Steve Fossett became the first person to fly around the world alone, nonstop, in any kind of aircraft; his vehicle of choice was the 10-story high balloon Spirit of Freedom. From takeoff to landing, this journey took him 14 days 19 hours 50 minutes over a course of 20,626.48 miles (33,195.10 km). Of his entire aircraft, only the capsule survived the landing; it was later given the the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. In addition to the circumnavigation record, the voyage also set a number of ballooning records: Fastest (200 miles per hour), Fastest Around the World (13.5 days), Longest Distance Flown Solo in a Balloon (20,482.26 miles), and 24-Hour Balloon Distance (3,186.80 miles).

And then there’s Jason Lewis, who traversed the world under human power. Lewis and his companion Stevie Smith mountain-biked through France, Spain and Portugal; peddled a paddle-boat across the Atlantic to Miami; roller-bladed across much of North America; and then peddled the paddle-boat from San Fransisco to Hilo, Hawaii, where Smith ended his journey. Lewis then hiked across Hawaii; paddle-boated from Hawaii to Tarawa atoll and then – along with the boat’s builder – on to the Solomon Islands. There he was joined by April Abril, who helped him cross the Coral Sea to Australia. Lewis then cycled across Australia and had to spend some time raising funds to continue his journey. Once again, Lewis took to his paddle-boat, paddling from Darwin, Australia to East Timor; there he traded his paddle-boat for a kayak, with which he traversed the Indonesian archipelago.  Landing in Singapore, he biked from Singapore to the Himalayas, where he hiked and biked to the Indian port of Mumbai. There, he was reunited with his paddle-boat and crossed the Arabian Sea to Djibouti. He faced legal problems in Africa and was forced to complete his journeys there mainly by night. Lewis finally reached Syria, where he completed the remainder of his circumnavigation by bicycle.  Most notable in an expedition beset by hazards of all types, Lewis survived two bouts of malaria, septicemia, mild schizophrenia, and a crocodile attack. The entire expedition took roughly 13 years.

Now, I haven’t come close to the accomplishments of any of these men in any respect but one: I’ve gone the distance. Using the accepted distance of 24,091.5 miles as the distance around the world at the equator, I completed my 14 year journey at 4:15 PM EST on October 10, 2013.

I began running back in the seventh grade because I didn’t make the basketball team. Although I eventually succeeded, by that time running had become my passion. There’s something soothing about the rhythm and pace of placing one foot after another for miles on end. I memorized poetry, songs, and learned to be alone with my own thoughts. In that regard, my failure to make the basketball team is also responsible for this blog.

So, what did this circumnavigation cost me? By my count, I used at least 14 pairs of shoes, 60 pairs of socks, 5 rolls of duct tape, 20 large boxes of band-aids, hundreds of Cliff energy gels, and copious amounts of water. But at least I didn’t suffer from scurvy.

There is Something in October . . .

There is something in October sets the gypsy blood astir;

We must rise and follow her,

When from every hill of flame

She calls and calls each vagabond by name.

~ Bliss Carman

I love October.

Fall began a few weeks ago, but October is the first true Fall month. The invigorating autumn air makes running downright enjoyable after the long, hot summer. The swarming insects begin to die off; I can finally bask on my front porch and finally use the patio furniture we bought three months ago. Leaves have begun to turn color, calling into remembrance fall afternoons of my childhood spent raking leaves with my grandmother – “Mind the rhubarb!” – and the campfire smell of burning leaves. Bath and Body Works fails to compete.

Already the requests for apple pie come in. Nearly every student – even those who “don’t like pie” – wants a piece. I’m flattered, really. Rarely are there leftovers, but the ultimate compliment came from my mother when she said I make a better apple pie than she did. Along with the apples come the pumpkins. Soon the Episcopal church will set up their Pumpkin Patch and the orange gourds of fall will mix and mingle with the 18th century gravestones. The innards will be carefully scooped and separated by me; my wife will turn them into muffins, cupcakes, and roasted seeds. We’ll spend some weekends with the cousins carving faces; I have an epic Dalek design for this year.

dalekpumpkinThis month has a special reading list. Although it has nothing to do with the month, I always read The Hunt for Red October a some point in the month. This year’s reading will be bittersweet: Tom Clancy passed away last week; now I’ll never get my autographed copy. At least he finished one last book. Ray Bradbury makes two appearances this month with Something Wicked This Way Comes and The Halloween Tree. I remember seeing Halloween Tree as an animated special when I was a kid; I wonder if any stations will show it? Speaking of animated specials, be sure to watch Tim Burton’s classic stop-motion masterpiece: Nightmare Before Christmas. I found the 20th Anniversary Edition at B&N the other week. Hopefully it will go on sale after the season.

OctoberReadingOvershadowed by Halloween, October 31 is also Reformation Day. Without intending to, Martin Luther sparked a revolt against the Catholic Church that – in turn – influenced the creation of hundreds of Protestant denominations and introduced the concept of religious freedom – an idea not seen since Justinian made Christianity Byzantium’s only legal religion. In college I used to slip random portions of the 95 Theses into student boxes or under doors. I tired passing them out to Trick-or-Treaters a few years ago, but now no-one even bothers to come to my door. Oh well; it’s just another tragic result of America’s declining educational system.

Enjoy your pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin donuts, and apple pie. Drink coffee on the front porch. Enjoy fall. Love October.
