Teaser Tuesday: The Dead Town

Like the wheels on the bus going ’round and ’round, the Wheel of Time has turned to Teaser Tuesday.

Just in case you don’t know, Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share a few sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers!*

*I wish I could take credit for this introduction, but I shamelessly stole it from Heather over at bitsnbooks. To help me make amends, you should go check out her blog.

This week, my current read is The Dead Town, book 5 in the Frankenstein series by Dean Koontz.

Now, I’ve not read books 1-4, nor have I read any Dean Koontz before now. What prompted my to read this particular book? I won it from the library by correctly guessing the work with this first line:

It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.

I was invited to select a paperback from a box kept behind the Reference Desk. Among the Sue Grafton and James Patterson novels nestled this, the most interesting (to me) of the lot. From the back cover:

The war against humanity is raging. As the small town of Rainbow Falls, Montana, comes under siege, scattered survivors come together to weather the onslaught of the creatures set loose upon the world. As they ready for battle against overwhelming odds, they will learn the full scope of Victor Frankenstein’s nihilistic plan to remake the future—and the terrifying reach of his shadowy, powerful supporters.

Now the good will make their last, best stand. In a climax that will shatter every expectation, their destinies and the fate of humanity hang in the balance.

The Truly Random Number Generator sends us to page 114:

From the darkness in the adjoining bathroom, through the half-open door, into the stillness of the master bedroom came a sound like scores of urgent whispering voices.

Thrilling!

In Retrospect

I gave Cassandra Clare’s The Bane Chronicles 3 stars:

Having enjoyed both the Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series, I was delighted to find this book at our local bookstore.

I found the short story format especially enjoyable; the format allowed me to read one or two stories a night and then actually get some sleep every once in a while. I also appreciated the graphic novel-style comic accompanying each story.

If Magnus Bane intrigued you in the earlier series, you’ll love this book as it fills in his backstory and reexamines certain events from his perspective.
