International Orangutan Day

Today is International Orangutan Day. Terry Pratchett once observed that “in all the worlds graced by their presence, it is suspected that they can talk but choose not to do so in case humans put them to work, possibly in the television industry.”

Asked for comment, one orangutan said simply “OOK”.

No. 2 Pencil Day

Today is No. 2 Pencil Day, and as I said on mechanical pencil day, the best of all pencils is the black Ticonderoga No. 2.

Interestingly, today is also black cat appreciation day, so if you have a black cat named Ticonderoga (or even Number 2, for whatever reason) you are double-winning today.

It’s Roller Coaster Day, so take time to celebrate the twists, turns, and thrills of these adrenaline-packed machines made metal mayhem and wooden wonders.

Many years ago I rode Expedition: Everest at Animal Kingdom, and the stranger next to me screamed profanities all through the second half.

World Calligraphy Day

It’s world calligraphy day – in grade school we had a semester of calligraphy class and I’ve kinda sorta kept up with it; I still know at least one hand and with a lot of effort can do something resembling illumination. Is calligraphy class still a thing? Do you know calligraphy? Let me know!
