Sunday Snapshots

Thanks for stopping by to see what’s gone on in the last week! Indeed, it was quite busy:

The Shepherd’s Crown arrived; I already wrote about its unboxing and shared some photographs.

One of my 9th grade students drew what I’m calling “Sumerian Olaf”.

Yes, she simply misspelled “summer” but also realized her unwitting pun and asked me to take a picture before erasing it.

Sumerian Olaf

A very large praying mantis came to visit; this dude measured at least 8 inches long!

We moved him safely outside before the cat did something mean to him.

Huge Praying Mantis

I picked up an uncut straw from Subway.

Seriously, straw machine – you had one job . . . one job!

Uncut Straw

World History students presented their explorer reports; one group made a spice game: students had to guess what a spice was based on color, texture, and smell. The spices included cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, pepper, and turmeric. The group was about to throw away the piles when I noticed how they’d run together on the plate.

Just for fun I participated in one of those silly Facebook “quizzes” that assigns you random results based on your name.  This time, I liked the results.

Weird Test

The mailman brought a surprise on Saturday: a postcard from fellow blogger Vanessa of Petal and Mortar!

Thanks, Vanessa!

Sunday Snapshots

Sometimes I forget what I’ve done over the past week.

Then I look at the photos on my camera and think “Oh yeah! I remember that!”

Such was the case this week.

Mr Toms Birthday CupcakesMr. Tom’s birthday was this week.

He turned 97.

He wanted cupcakes, so he got cupcakes.

I”ll be honest, the “balloons” looked a bit odd.

Blackened WalmartApparently I went to Walmart at some point. I know it was during a storm, and for whatever reason the overhead lights were out. Everything else was working just fine . . . just not the lights. Go figure.

I’m fining I take quite a few pictures of food . . . maybe so I can remember what I ate? For example: I went to Wendy’s when K was craving something salty and we had nothing in the house; I picked up some french fries and a vanilla frosty to go with them. On Monday, a student brought me a bacon and egg croissant from Dunkin’ Donuts. And, for reasons yet unknown, I took a picture of buttered bread.

I think I took this picture of a book and coffee for last week’s photo challenge (today was a good day) but never posted it. In other book news, the last Discworld novel The Shepherd’s Crown was released. The last book is for me to keep track of stuff in. So long as I don’t lose that book, I’m ok.

And finally, this past Friday was National Bow Tie Day (International??)

One word dominated my week:

School

Teacher Grade BookA sure omen that summer break has ended.

classroom 2015-2016I finished my classroom with hours to spare.

I wrote the rough draft to a veteran’s day program – 6,000 words – in under 24 hours. Editing takes place this weekend; roles assigned on Monday; rehearsals begin Tuesday – only 46 school days to performance.

Sticky Notes Veteran's DaySo many sticky notes! So many references!

School began Friday; this was the first thing I did upon arriving:

first coffe of school 2015-2016Yes, it was gone by 10:00.

Oh, someone donated 2000 square feet of sod.

laying sod 1 laying sod 2Teachers wear many hats; now I can add “sod layer” to the list.

I accomplished two things this week:

First, I helped fix the drainage at the school:

Second, I salvaged some old books from the dumpster:

Oh, and K’s plans got moved to this week. You know what that means:

For the record, I also got Wal-Mart brand Ginger Ale like I said I would last weekend.

What about the milkshake? For a whole 40¢ more, I bought this carton of ice cream! w00t!

Hey, before you go, would you mind giving me your opinion?

What did I do this week?

Well . . .

I helped Krystal participate in the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the Word has Ever Seen by

showing her idea of love

using cat tails as mustaches

no cats were harmed in the creation of this project

creating a portrait of Robert Downey, Jr. / Ironman out of salt & pepper

holding Death’s funeral

writing a short story with the letters of elemental abbreviations as found on the Periodic Table

taping an End of the World message

proving no man is an island

recreating a Roadrunner cartoon

in the style of a Sam Shepherd play

in the style of Michael Bay

throwing a conspiracy theorist party

making a trailer for a horror flick called X is for Xylophone

designing furniture from recycled materials found outside

playing croquet on the lawn of an historic site

while dressed as zombies

recreating a national landmark with the food in our pantry

There might have been a few things I missed.

However, since these actions were part of competition, I can’t show you any pictures . . . yet.

So, what can I show you?

My package arrived from Germany:

Er Ist Wieder Da Package

I made two more apple pies:

Apple Pies August 7 2015

I just couldn’t let my leftover apples from the last ones go to waste, you know?

My submission for Three Line Thursday earned an Honorable Mention:

Three Line Thurday Honorable Mention

My plans changed for Saturday and I didn’t get Little Caesar’s pizza nor did I get a milkshake. But we did order pizza Friday night and – look! – there’s Wal-Mart brand Ginger Ale just like I claimed:

Sunday Snapshots

As you might remember, my folks visited this week.

Saturday

They arrived Saturday afternoon and wanted to go out to dinner.

Mom chose Red Robin (Yum!); so we piled into the van and away we went.

Halfway there I realized I was still in my work shirt.

Luckily, Red Robin is attached to the mall, and one of the stores had a sale.

MST3K shirt detailHooray for MST3K!

Sunday

On the way out the door for Sunday church, Mom realized that Dad and I dressed very similarly:

Dad and Me on Sunday

As we were close to the beach, we visited Fort Macon and Atlantic Beach between the morning and evening services.

First up, Fort Macon:

As I wandered around looking for unique architectural details, I noticed something about the springer.

Then, it was on to the beach!

And onto the beach, as it were.

That evening, we were back at church. What luck it was a fellowship night!

Monday

We went shopping for groceries to make apple pie.

Dad also cleaned our coffee pots. He did a good job, even if I did have to stop him from trying to take apart the Keurig.

Tuesday

We visited the Farmer’s Market and Tryon Palace

I made a Venison Roast, which I didn’t take a picture of; however, we did have apple pie and vanilla ice cream for desert:

Apple Pie and Vanilla Ice Cream

Wednesday

Mom and Dad left Wednesday morning, but not before we ate breakfast at Baker’s Kitchen

Thursday – Saturday

Soon after they left, I developed all the symptoms of a simply wonderful summer cold.

So, I used the time to catch up on my TBR:
