Saturday Morning Coffee

Hello there! Come on in, pull up a seat, and let’s talk for a bit. Can I get you some coffee? Tea? How about some cereal? I’ve been looking forward to your visit all week. It’s been a really good week.

First Swordfish

On Monday, I cooked something I’d never cooked before: swordfish. Krystal and I are always up for trying new things, so when we found a great deal on swordfish, we leapt at the opportunity. Now, I’ve only cooked fish once before: pre-seasoned catfish filets. This was something else entirely: a fish steak. So, to the internet I went in search of ideas, and ended up marinating the swordfish in a mixture of olive oil, minced garlic, lemon juice/zest, and cumin. It was good, but a little overcooked. At least, my piece was overdone. Krystal said hers was perfectly cooked and flaky.

Tuesday, depending on where you are in the world, was either Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day. Maybe it was all three. I know that I ate more than my fair share of pancakes, liberally spreading Nutella and elderberry jam and strawberry-rhubarb jam and maple syrup and honey and butter over several stacks of pancakes. No exaggeration: pancakes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Indy also needed his nail trimmed, so I was able to spend some quality time with some furry friends.

Ash Wednesday 2018Wednesday was Ash Wednesday. I don’t do ashes myself, but I’m all for anything that helps us focus on our own mortality. For me, every day is Ash Wednesday. And if you do observe Ash Wednesday/Lent, and are looking for a Lenten devotional, here’s a good one.

Wednesday was also Valentine’s Day, a general non-holiday in our house for a variety of reasons. However, I try to do something small for Krystal anyway. This year was a resounding success:

Thai ginger chickenThursday we went out to eat using some money we’d been given expressly for that purpose. We decided to try a new Thai place that’d opened up. Great service and atmosphere, it didn’t hurt that we were the only ones in the restaurant, thanks to the Valentine’s Day rush the day before and the fact we arrived right when the opened for the evening. I had the ginger chicken; Krystal had the shrimp pad Thai.

Krystal told me she’d ordered something for me. Not necessarily for Valentine’s Day, but just because. It’s coming in today, and when it gets here I’ll tell you what it is. Not many people would be excited about this particular gift, but I am.

Today I’m doing some cleaning around the house and then getting ready for our Bob’s Burger’s Date Night.

What have you been up to?
