Sunday Shakeup

I got my days mixed up and there was not a World of Darkness Session Zero Today, so we went shopping and then saw Twisters and now I’m home watching Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island and actually enjoying most of the political sphere on my social media so my energy his high but my brain is scattered as I type up this weekend wrapup. Pull up a chair and pour your beverage of choice as we chat about the week that was.

Since last Saturday I only lost one long-time acquaintance on social media; they said if anyone said that the attack on Trump wasn’t the worst thing to happen politically since 2015, then we should block them. They made a specific point to say that January 6 was not worse than the attack on Trump. So, because I happen to think an attempted coup is worse than attempted murder, I preemptively removed them from my feed. Not even two days laters and the RNC was back to doing things like this:

This week at work was interesting as I saw more than a few former students of mine come in to register for fall. The reactions since I stopped teaching in 2020 from folks who knew me before I began living authentically can be broken into two main camps:

Many adults(either directly to me or in gossiping to others):

wow you let yourself go

Many former students or younger acquaintances:

wow you look so much better/happier. Not that you weren’t happy before, but now it’s like you mean it.

It’s amazing how being happy and more mentally healthy will just make some people angry or upset that I no longer fit into their idea of what kind of a person I should be.

And since I’m here, if your reading this and you interact with me either online or in person, remember:

My pronouns are They/Them

“sir” & “mister” rub against my metaphorical fur

Monday was St Swithin’s Day, and the weather was hot and humid. But if the next forty days can be as wonderful-feeling as that afternoon it will be great. I was at lunch when my mom called me; she’d received a letter from one of the lenders for my private students loans (argle bargle) and wondered if I had heard anything. I had not, so I went into my spam folders and soon enough verified that

ONE OF MY STUDENT LOANS IS FINALY PAID OFF!!

It won’t be a hugely substantial amount each month, but with the way things are going every little bit helps. Does this mean I can say “I paid off my student loan, and I think everyone should have theirs forgiven” or do I have to wait another five to ten years for the second loan to be paid off? Note that under the terms of the loan there is no incentive to pay it off early.

Tuesday showed me that not many people like snakes, and that’s okay, I don’t much care for them either. However, I’ve learned to live and let live for the most part, unless they’re venomous. Which reminds me that the other day my in-laws had a rattlesnake in their yard, which they were alerted to by their Australian Shepherd, Indy. The snake was successfully dispatched, I am told.

Wednesday was Tattoo Day, and I really want another tattoo – maybe a Pusheen one? – and the place that did the flash where I got the paw print ran another flash event yesterday (Saturday) but I did not get one as it was summer themed and I am not a summer person. Keeping my fingers crossed for a fall/autumn themed flash event.

Also on Wednesday, the following happened:

  • I locked myself out of the house but realized it immediately. Thankfully Krystal was home and I called her to let me in. I had unlocked the car while in the house, put the keys back on their holder, and walked out. I was trying to be quick because . . .
  • It is now hot enough that opening the front door will set off the fire alarm in the main living area. Seriously, gotta be quick.
  • D&D was cancelled (I would have been late anyway due to play rehearsal) so I got milkshakes and worked a bit on my playlist for an upcoming Sabbat vampire.

I have a love-hate relationship with petty leave at work. By that I mean I love that I get it but hate that it caps out and so I have to find time to use it. Long story short I went in to work a half hour later than usual on Thursday . . . only to work an extra half hour assisting guests to our department who came in needing help.

I’d really like to use my time, I promise!

Thursday was also sour candy day, but I did not have any sour candy.

Friday was stick out your tongue day, and I know I did that quite a bit as I ran lines on my day off. I also went grocery shopping and saw a regular visitor at work who recognized me and wanted to tell me how amazingly helpful our entire department is when they come in. That was a good way to start things.

Other than the fact that I had locked myself out of the house again, and once more needed to be rescued by Krystal.

Saturday was another rehearsal day, and while I was out grocery shopping on Friday my brain said “make baked beans and hamburgers on Saturday”

So I was up early getting my soaked beans in the crock pot and then later that evening assembling what became Münster cheeseburgers with lettuce. tomato, pickles, and mayo. Ketchup and mustard optional and available upon request – Krystal had ketchup and I had both.

I will admit to a snag with the beans in that I didn’t get tomato paste but did have sauce and diced tomatoes so I ran them both through a blender, used three times the tomato liquid as paste called for, and adjusted the water ratio accordingly. I did have to use twice the amount of thickener at the end, but Krystal said this was my best batch yet, coming back for seconds yesterday and asking for “just beans” for supper tonight.

I posted the photo online and one of my friends said

good god those burgers are downright ~seductive~

That’s the finest compliment I’ve received in a while and I’ll take that. The burgers tasted just as good as they looked, and vice-versa.

Today, Sunday, saw me go outside several times today. My first foray was a quick errand that prompted this observation:

The center turn lane is not a pedestrian pathway, particularly when there is both a bike lane and a sidewalk on either side of the street.

Later, both Krystal and I realized we’d gotten our days mixed up and while we thought we had a World of Darkness campaign session x zero today, it is really next Sunday. So we went shopping (Krystal found a Pusheen pin and lanyard for me) and then went and saw Twisters. It was good, if predictable – as I told one person, it had the exact opposite of a twist ending. But I was also reminded that the thing with action movies is to enjoy them for the action, and in that, it delivered.

POLITICS SECTION BEGINS

Of course, the big thing today was President Biden’s announcement he would no longer seek reelection, is withdrawing from the 2024 election, and is endorsing Vice President Harris for the Democratic Nomination.

i can’t say this was the decision I would have made at this point. My main reason is that Biden was never really challenged in the primary. Biden was supposed to be a one term candidate, one who a large number of his voter base wanted to see challenged, and they were essentially told “no”. So they adjusted their mindset and largely got themselves set to support Biden in November – until rich donors and crypto investors started making a stink, and that optics of that is not optimal.

Looking forward to mainstream media continuing to push for a Trump victory regardless of who is selected for the Democratic ticket, and all the opinion pieces tomorrow and in the days to come decrying Trump’s age.

🙄

That’s sarcasm; the media should cover Trump like the legal rapist and convicted felon the courts have found him to be, the dictator he claims he will be, and the authoritarian a significant portion of his supporters want him to be. I’d settle for articles about his age.

Somehow, nine years on, Trump is still being treated like a quirky anomaly to bring in higher ratings.

Obviously this is a developing situation and it will likely look drastically different next weekend. I’m already hearing rumors North Carolina governor Roy Cooper is a theoretical VP shortlist. I can say from living in NC, with its Republican majority/supermajorty, that I appreciat(ed) his leadership. Such a choice may also help keep Roberts & Morrow from becoming governor & instruction superintendent, respectively – and like Trump, neither of them belong near levers of power, not least for their well-documented statements expressing a desire to kill political opponents.

POLITICS SECTION ENDS

But let’s bring things back to happier thoughts. For example, I’m thoroughly enjoying watching a bunch of MST3K on Tubi. Since I have to watch it on my phone, it not only provides entertainment but also keeps me from scrolling endlessly for hours and hours and hours spiking my anxiety and blood pressure.

I also got my permanent, non-paper coffee filter really really really clean. It took a lot of soaking in vinegar and hot baths in soapy water but it now looks only gently used rather than abused uncaringly.

As I scroll my own social media making sure I’ve hit the highlights of the week, I see a remainder to stay hydrated, and that neither the large movie-style Dr Pepper I had nor the pot of coffee seemingly calling my name will cut it. So, a tumbler of water with a squirt of lemon juice it is.
