Dog Days of Summer (2025)

It’s Sunday, and it’s sure living up to its name: the sun is bright and at 10:00 AM it already felt like 99 degrees. Contrary to Chappell Roan, it doesn’t make me feel like dancing, it makes me feel like staying inside with the AC on – and maybe a few fans, too.

If I’m totally honest whenever I hear the term “dog days” I think of the song by Florence + The Machine.

A quick bit of research tells me that 2025’s Dog Days of Summer run from July 3 to August 11, and that the term is used to describe the hottest, most uncomfortable days of summer in the northern hemisphere.

If you’re me, it also means that you’ve been dog-sitting since July 3rd – a happy coincidence of dates and descriptions.

My week has consisted of chillin’ (or attempting to) with a sweet Husky named Luna, which we achieved mainly by sitting inside with the AC and fans while How It’s Made and Mystery Science Theater 3000 played on Tubi.

I also did a lot of caching up in writing in my journal/commonplace book, completed the second book in the Game of Thrones series (A Clash of Kings), nearly finished the third book (A Storm of Swords), and worked on beginning to memorize lines for The Laramie Project.

I went to the thrift stores but didn’t find anything I was willing to spend money on, though I did find two things I was willing to take pictures of:

First was a movie poster, which caught my eye because it featured something about John Dillinger. My friend Mr Tom was in Chicago with friends visiting the World’s Fair and they were getting ice cream at a shop just around the corner from the theater where Dillinger was shot (I guess maybe I should say “spoilers” if you haven’t seen the movie Publix Enemies with Johnny Depp?) – they heard the commotion, went to see what was up, and watched the aftermath of the government-sanctioned ambush/assassination. Sure, we know the official account says Dillinger resisted arrest by pulling a gun and fleeing, which the authorities said posed a threat to officers and the public, making Dillinger’s murder a “justifiable homicide” but are we really going to buy all that with what we now know almost 91 years later?

No, no we are not.

The second item was this 8mm movie camera, which is similar to the one my Call of Cthulhu/Old Gods of Appalachia character Reece uses. I considered buying it for a prop, but while $20 might be reasonable, I decided against it. It just didn’t click with me.

There’s also been a rabbit outside this week, which I haven’t been able to get a good photograph of, but I did save it from a hawk – really!! It swooped down and had the rabbit pinned to the ground and I shouted and threw a stick at the bird and it let go and flew away. There’s not much I can do if something happens when I’m not watching, but since I’m not a documentary filmmaker I will intervene and protect the animals if I can – just like I saved a bee from a pool this week as well.

In lieu of a photograph, have some digital rabbit-themed art:

Anyway, that’s been my week. Short and sweet this week.

Oh! But speaking of sweet, the family I’m dog-sitting for sent me a text:

That’s right: I have not one but TWO cases of Moxie! I’ve got one can in the fridge and then I’m going to ration them out; I’m determined to have at least one can make it to October 31 🤣

For those that don’t know, Moxie is regional to parts of New England; I had a college friend introduce me back in the day thinking I’d hate it but I did not 🤣

As for taste, imagine a sweet mix of cola and cough syrup, or maybe a liquid version of a carbonated Ricola cough drop (original). Now, those might not sound appealing, and honestly I don’t know if I’m doing it justice, but I think it somehow works.

I enjoy it with a grilled cheese (and tomato soup, but not tonight, because it’s just too hot for soup)

And then since I started this post I went shopping and found the 2025 release of Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge!!

Now; what about you? What have you been up to? Everything going okay?
