Janus: 2021 (Looking Forward)

It’s the time for resolutions. But rather than resolutions, let’s call them goals.

Some of these are significantly changed from previous years, but 2020 has convinced me to set more reasonable goals. Extending a goal feels much better than shortening one.

  • Exercise at least four times a week – not a specific type or distance, just exercise
  • Read at least two books a month – most previous years I read one a week. Strangely, being home for most of 2020, I read less than I have in almost 20 years. If you have any book recommendations, drop them in the comments!
  • Communicate more with family and friends. Is it weird to have a calendar listing who to reach out to each day? I’m of two minds: if I don’t have a schedule it won’t happen, but I also don’t want my loved ones thinking their just an item to be checked off.
  • Write more – I’m not aiming to finish any of my larger projects, but I did practically nothing during 2020. I have a poem I’ve been mulling over . . .
  • Continue to support small/local businesses and artists. Conventions may or may not be held, and if they are, I doubt we’ll attend. The Con Crud is already bad enough . . . But I want my favorite vendors to survive this, and they can’t do that without money.
  • Continue to improve my mental health and focus on self-care. One of my good friends described my 2020 as my chrysalis – the year I metamorphosed into a beautiful butterfly. I want to keep that going.

Stretch Goals

  • Publish an article in a magazine, wether print or online, wether paid or not
  • Get another tattoo (the Death of Rats in the style of My Chemical Romance’s Black Parade band leader
  • Purchase EnChroma glasses

Last year one of my goals was to improve myself. I’d say I succeeded in that.

Four Years

WordPress just wished me a happy four-year anniversary. Has it really been that long? Continue reading “Four Years”

Monday Morning Grievance: Did Daylight Saving Mess Up My New Years’ Resolution?

Just when I thought dealing with the time change was over and done until Spring, this happens. I am not happy.

Monday Morning Grievances Logo 1

It’s Monday morning & I haven’t had my coffee.

If I’m being honest, I haven’t looked much at my New Years’ resolutions since February. However, there are three of them I’ve remembered and actively tried to keep up with:

Be an overall better person, someone more pleasant to be around

Use the Library more without incurring any fines

Write a post for every day of the year

So far so good on the first two, though I did double-check with my wife about my attitude. She confirms that things have been better this year. I plan on keeping this going, I’m not going to stop once 2016 is over. Given the events of 2016, we need more pleasant people in the world.

But, I’m concerned about my posting goal. You see, the United States has this thing called Daylight Saving Time. I hate it for a variety of reasons, but now I have further reason to despise it.

As you might know, I run a biweekly writing challenge, Wicked Word Wednesday (check back Wednesday for the next challenge!). Because this is a challenge and I have readers all over the world, I schedule the prompts to publish at midnight, just as the day turns from one to the next.

Unfortunately, adjusting my time on the Admin page has retroactively changed the time – and therefore the date – of those posts. So a post that was originally published at 00:00 on October 12 now shows up as being posting at 23:00 on October 11.

My solid wall of blue (?) is now pocked with grey and black. Behold:

Does this mean that I’ve failed in my resolution mere weeks before the turn of the year? What should I do – if anything – to correct the atrocity? Let me know via the poll or in the comments!

Whatever Happened to the Prompt Box?

Despite my own enthusiasm, some projects just fall by the wayside.

Time to bring one of them back. Continue reading “Whatever Happened to the Prompt Box?”
