Sunday Snapshots

The week was busy; you’d think I’d enjoy having some time off right at the beginning of a school year (several of my classes were cancelled due to fields trips), but reality dictates that deviations from routine must result in tiredness. Such is life.

So, what did I do this week?

I wrote lesson plans, prepared projects, caught up on grading, and found some time to read. I also wrote a more student-friendly adaptation of “The Story of the Flood” from The Epic of Gilgamesh.

One of my coworkers brought in a cheesecake for her birthday. She didn’t want us to know ahead of time (at least, I didn’t know), yet she brought in food to celebrate. It went well with this Dunkin Coffee the same teacher gave me for helping her with our upcoming Veteran’s Day program.

Friday marked the 14th anniversary of 9/11. I remember where I was at 8:46 that day – I was at the dentist, just as I was for the Oklahoma City bombing, the attack on the USS Cole, the Atlanta Olympic bombing, and at least one other tragedy I’m forgetting. For the first time, none of my students were alive on 9/11/01; does this officially make me “old”? I imagine this is how others remembered Pearl Harbor or the Kennedy assassination. I was responsible for placing the flag at half-mast fourteen years ago. Today, I did so again.

This weekend I began working with K and my cousins on a webshow (coming October 2015). Here are some of the promotional materials we developed:

On some of my downtime I surfed the net and messed around with Siri. Here’s two notable things I found:

Don’t forget to follow me on:

Facebook – where I share news stories, articles from other blogs, and various and sundry miscellany that happens to catch my eye. It’s stuff you won’t see here! Well, mostly.

Instagram – where I show you my Life in Motion and share quotes and such. The widget only shows my last three photographs – don’t you want to see them all?

Twitter – where you can see my thoughts in 140 characters or less. Also, funny retweets.

Sunday Snapshots

One word dominated my week:

School

Teacher Grade BookA sure omen that summer break has ended.

classroom 2015-2016I finished my classroom with hours to spare.

I wrote the rough draft to a veteran’s day program – 6,000 words – in under 24 hours. Editing takes place this weekend; roles assigned on Monday; rehearsals begin Tuesday – only 46 school days to performance.

Sticky Notes Veteran's DaySo many sticky notes! So many references!

School began Friday; this was the first thing I did upon arriving:

first coffe of school 2015-2016Yes, it was gone by 10:00.

Oh, someone donated 2000 square feet of sod.

laying sod 1 laying sod 2Teachers wear many hats; now I can add “sod layer” to the list.

Sunday Snapshots

I cleaned this week; picture opportunities seldom presented themselves.

That said, here’s a glimpse of my non-cleaning activities:

Books:

signed last will bryn greenwoodI rediscovered my signed copy of Last Will by Bryn Greenwood.

amazing maurice educated rodents coverAnother package arrived, this one bearing The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett.

Food:

german coffee
This German coffee powered most activities this week.

last piece of pie july 2015
This was the last piece of pie [with more of that German coffee].

Miscellany

haircut july 2015
I got a haircut for the first time in three months.
This is the “after” picture; I think I accidentally deleted the “before” picture.

In addition to cleaning, our church’s Vacation Bible School took up most evenings.
This was my view for a good hour – or more – each night.

vbs script 2015
I took part in the skit each night; here’s a glimpse of one of the scripts.

This decoration supposed to portray a lion.
I can’t help but see the Holy Grail surrounded by rays of light.

Coffee and the Holy Grail
Obviously, the Grail contains coffee.

What Were You Thinking?

Every once in a while something catches my eye.

Something that makes me go

What !?

Something like this movie cover:

Cymbeline Movie

Just read that blurb:

…mashup of “SONS OF ANARCHY” with “GAME OF THRONES”

Who knew Shakespeare wrote popular TV dramas?

Worse, there’s no mention of The Bard anywhere on the case.

Such a travesty.

Then I saw this:

Coffee Wine

It’s the usual coffee quote, but since when is coffee wine?

Sometimes I despair for humanity.

The Gentle Subjugation of Humanity

Special thanks goes to Liesel of Skill Up Skillet for suggesting today’s topic!

          The Gentle Subjugation of Humanity

Waiting for centuries, biding time.

Staging a bloodless, velvet revolution.

Infiltrating the very fabric of society, all fell victim:

    Princes and Potentates

    Priests and Popes

    Politicians and People

Like cannibals of old, we gained power by consumption.

  Power, but not victory.

Now, we are enslaved:

Economies of nations rise and fall.

  Temples call for universal worship.

  Factions arise.

  Blood spills.

  We cannot function.

                Coffee Reigns Supreme

Three Treasures

My Wife is my greatest treasure, but as I’ve mentioned before we’re rather particular about sharing personal photographs.

I already shared how coffee is my daily dose of bliss; spoiler alert: it makes another appearance here!

First, there are the family treasures: the kind of thing you’d want to grab in case of fire.

IMG_2355For me, that’s my great-grandfather’s matchsafe. He was a printer on turn-of-the-century banana boats (that’s the 1890s-1900s, by the way) as well as almost serving on the Titanic, but didn’t. This particular matchsafe is from the SS Almirante, a merchant vessel out of Belfast, Ireland that sank off Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1918. I don’t believe Great-Grandpa was on board.

Second, there are the daily treasures: the little things that help make life worth living.

You guessed it, time for more coffee:

Finally, there are the rare treasures: things that are only here for a short time and then gone for good.

Like lebkuchen from Day’s Bakery:

IMG_2364Because even if someone buys the bakery, it just won’t be the same, you know?
