Midsummer Under the Heat Dome

It’s Sunday night and I’ve got dinner in the crock pot and a movie on the television and now’s as good a time as any to get caught up.

This week has been hot. Next week will be triple-digit hot. They say we’re under a heat dome – well, I (for one) am already done with summer and it’s only just officially begun. I don’t like the heat or the brightness or the long days or many of the “summer activities” like swimming or the beach. Give me cool autumn days and pumpkin patches and everything fall. On that note, this week was the summer solstice, which means that now the days will start getting shorter and going back to the way I prefer.

I was able to spend time Friday with friends walking their property; here’s a look at one of their wildflower plots and a flower and a mushroom we found:

Then on Saturday one of my friends had a Summer Solstice party. without exaggeration tbis is one of my favorite days of the year between May and September. This year I made raspberry & espresso fudge brownies, and every single one of them was eaten. It was a wonderful evening with good music, great friends, delicious food, and a beautiful fire. There was also a Henna station, drinks that went down smooth, and glitter!

It was so nice to spend time with folks that know me so well as to taste a Pimm’s Cup and say “this tastes like something Jay would bring” (I didn’t but I certainly drank it) or hear a single song in the 8+ hour group playlist and know immediately that I put it on there.

This week’s thrift finds included a green vase for LEGO dandelions Krystal found, a brass candle snuffer, paperback copies of Dance of Dragons and Left-Handed Booksellers of London, and several DVDs: The Librarian: Quest for the Spear; The Scorpion King; True Grit (2010); The Shawshank Redemption, Far and Away (only Cruise film I’ll watch); World War Z; Trick ‘r Treat; and Event Horizon.

I suppose that was a good score to make up for the fact I broke my headphones:

And now I have butter chicken in the crock pot and I’m playing through those DVDs and having a relaxing Sunday night.

How have you been?

What are you doing?

  1. This is genuinely apropos of nothing specific, simply a message to tell you how much I enjoy every one of your posts. Every time I see a new one, I savor it, and it’s a bright spot in my day. Your missives are full of honesty and joy and self-knowledge that I think everyone should strive to find and have. Thank you for sharing, Jay!

    1. Thank you so much! I have quite a few folks who tell me they read every post (either in person or elsewhere on social media) but seeing a comment here on my actual post never gets old.

Thanks for helping me start my day with joy!
