Why did the Tourist Cross the Road?

Living in a town reliant on visitors is both a blessing and a curse.

On one hand, one meets all sorts of people.

On the other hand, one meets all sorts of people.

So, I decided to keep track of some of the weird & interesting & funny things I’ve been asked or overheard.

One night while running downtown, I came upon a young woman, obviously new to the area, showing her parents around town. Now, keep in mind that “historic downtown” consists of two blocks along two streets, and traffic apart from the restaurants is rare after dusk. It was nine at night and I hadn’t seen a car moving for at least twenty minutes. Passing the group on a street corner, I heard her say

It’s a nice small town, but crossing the road is so difficult without a light telling you when to cross.

Crossing light? Lady, our crosswalks are more of a suggestion than a rule. Ah well, I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Or not, in which case you’ll be standing on street corners a long, long time.
