Saturday Morning Coffee

Well, the morning’s almost over, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have coffee and chat a spell.

This week tragedy struck. My coffee maker quit. My 5-month old Keurig, a Christmas gift that I didn’t get around to using til after the move, suddenly started giving me short brews. I was supposed to be getting a little over a cup of coffee and instead I was getting a little under a third.

To make matters worse, the troubleshooting videos didn’t help and I’d never gotten around to registering my machine. But I decided to call customer support anyway, and boy am I glad I did.

By looking up the serial number, they determined that my machine was still in warranty and they replaced it for free, even the shipping! They claimed it would take 3-7 business days to arrive, but by some miracle it arrived in two! Huzzah!

I made good progress on my work-in-progress: a novella about Mr. Tom’s life. I added 4k words, settled on a title, and determined the cover art. I’m still waiting for some contributors to get back to me, but I’ve only a few sections to edit. Looks like I’ll be done by what would have been his 100th birthday after all!

I took some breaks along the way, hanging blackout curtains, doing some light housekeeping, grocery shopping, and cooking.

One of the recipes I tried was a tandoori-marinated swordfish with mango chutney. It was good, but the fish was still a little dry. I keep getting better, though.

I also tried a new spin on grilled cheese: Jarlsberg with candied onions. I’d never made candied onions before, let alone put them on a sandwich, but overall it was very enjoyable.

To help streamline breakfast, I found that it’s possible to make breakfast sandwiches on English muffins and freeze them. So far so good.

I’ve started reading two graphic by Neil Gaiman: A Study in Emerald and Sandman: Overture. I’ve actually finished the former, and it was a fine rendition of Sherlock Holmes set in a Lovecraftian London.

Smokey is doing much better this week. Here he is practicing his “if I fits I sits” moves:

My training week six went all right. The humidity was difficult to run in, but this morning the humidity broke. Unfortunately, it was broken by rain. However, I’d rather run in a light rain than the humidity.

On a sour note, one of the actors I was hoping to meet at SuperCon has canceled. Ah well, life happens. At least my photo op money was refunded.

Well, that’s about it for me.

  1. I’ve never made candied onions either. Only caramelizing ones…must be looking that one up. Huzzah on warranties that pan out. Very sweet. My fish–always dry or undercooked. I just don’t cook it often enough.
    When I made fish for the husband, he looks as if I am punishing him haha. But I love it.

    1. Candied onions are very similar to caramelized onions; I think the only difference is that candied onions have sugar added, with the end result being both sweeter and stickier. My recipe actually described the final product as “jammy”
