Bob’s Burgers Review: Chili Wonka

It’s Sunday morning evening, and that can only mean one thing: last night a few minutes ago, I made and ate a hamburger. Specifically, a burger featured on the hit series, Bob’s Burgers.

Chili Wonka [S7:E4 “They Serve Horses, Don’t They?”]

About the Episode

When Tina injures her ankle, she telecommutes to school under the RUMP program. With a name like that, how could she say no? Robot Tina makes a breakthrough with Jimmy Jr., and it couldn’t come at a better time: the beach party is just around the corner!

Of course, Louise and Gene just can’t let sleeping robots charge . . .

About the Burger

I made this burger while staying with my brother and his wife during our Hurricane Florence evacuation. I was kind of scared as this was the first time I’d made a brand new, untested burger for someone.

After some internet research, I decided to try another rub-based burger. Since this was the Chili Wonka burger, I knew the rub had to have both chili and chocolate, and settled on this recipe:

  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1.5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper

Of course we needed a cheese, and after some internet research regarding flavor profiles, I went with our recent favorite, Dubliner.

The Response

We liked this burger, with a few caveats.

First, the burger needed something. Leroy and Julia added horseradish.

Krystal added ketchup.

I ate mine plain.

The spice was also a tad bit off. We felt it could have used more chili powder and should have been more evenly distributed.

I should have mixed the spices into the meat rather than using it as a rub.

However, this doesn’t mean the burgers were bad. They were good, middle-of-the-road burgers and we gave them

Come back next week when we’ll try a new, as-yet-to-be-determined burger!
