The Gift: A Short Story

The folded sheet of paper tucked into his back pocket told him everything was ready. He listened for the turn of the iron key in the door; she was home. He pulled out her chair and she settled into it, eyeing the package at her place: a green book tied up with a silk ribbon. Untying the bow, she opened the book and read the folded leaflet tucked inside, then looked up at him as her bright, shining eyes filled with tears of joy.
