Amid everything that happened yesterday – and if you were on social media you know that quite a bit went on – was the sad news of the passing of John Hurt.
Until I watched this video in his memory, I didn’t realize how many of my favorite films he acted in. Seriously, A Man for All Seasons? How did I not know this? How did I not see? And yes, I’m slightly upset they didn’t get a clip from Doctor Who.
You see, John Hurt portrayed the War Doctor, the suppressed regeneration from the Time War, the Doctor “on the day it wasn’t possible to get it right.”
And in this role he brought us the two most important words in the Who reboot. Not the most heartfelt, or the most poignant, or the funniest – but the most important two words since Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor told us to run:
Rest now, my warrior.
Rest now, hardship is over.
A sad loss – John Hurt was a great actor. Wasn’t he also in ‘Alien’?

Yes, he died in the famous chest-bursting scene, which he reprised in Mel Brooks’ “Spaceballs”
