Saturday Morning Coffee

Good Morning, Friends! Come on in and we’ll chat.

How is it possible we missed our weekly chat last week? Oh, that’s right – the World Cup. There were good games all last weekend, with France 🇫🇷 Belgium 🇧🇪 England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and Croatia 🇭🇷 advancing to the quarter finals.

France advanced to the finals and Croatia stunned England, coming back from 1-0 to win their match 2-1. I’m gutted for England, and yet I have a sense of I-told-you-so vindication as I’ve been saying for months to watch out for Croatia. Later on today I’ll be watching the 3rd place England-Belgium game. Sadly, I will have to miss watching the championship game.

I’ll tell you more about why I’m missing it later on next week.

Smokey has had more good days than bad days recently. Yesterday he purred loudly for the first time in weeks. I know he’s older, but as long as he’s happy I will be, too.

As usual in the summer, I did some cooking. I actually tried two new recipes, and Krystal declared both of them five-star keepers. Krystal doesn’t lie about my cooking, either.

Spaghetti alla Ravellese: Spaghetti with zucchini fried in oil and garlic with a homemade pecorino romano cream sauce

Black-Eyed Pea & Kale Chili with Monterrey Jack Cheese (cheese not pictured)

Running and Training continue apace (pardon the pun). I was excited to participate in the second race in the Life Finds A Way series: Dino DNA 5K

Later on this evening I’ll be trying a new recipe based on Bob’s Burgers, this time one I’ve made up all on my own. Look for the review tomorrow.

Speaking of Bob’s Burgers, I had a lovely interaction with Holly Frey, one of the hosts of the Stuff You Missed in History Class, about the Bob’s Burgers cookbook and the reviews I do here on the blog. She actually read a few of my reviews and said she’d bookmarked it to see what I’ll do in the future! (See the Twitter thread here.)

Thanks to that interaction, I’ve decided to go to their live show in Raleigh next month. I wonder if there’ll be a meet & greet. I hope so.

There’s never really a dull moment, even late at night. There I was watching the end of Hunt for Red October, when I heard a snap and then the sound of running water. Our downstairs toilet tank had cracked and was sending water everywhere! It took me several minutes to find and unstick the water shut-off valve. Maintenance came the next day and replaced the commode. Huzzah for renting. Have you missed Teaser Tuesday? Well, I haven’t done much reading because I’m finishing writing my short book about Mr Tom. I’ll get back to reading at the end of August or so.Thats what I’ve been up to, how about you?

  1. I actually have coffee as I’m reading your post. Both recipes sound like something I’d like to try, especially with zucchini season coming. Congrats on your running and oh I feel for you with the bathroom flood. One day a hose let go out of the blue, just for nothing. There is such a panic to stop the water and we had no abilities at all in that area. We used every towel and blanket to keep the water from going downstairs (not completely successfully) until my dad came over with channel locks to close it up.
