Schrödinger’s Amenities

Well. Here it is Sunday afternoon and I feel like the day is just running away from me. That I’m getting distracted by every little thing and not really completing anything. Case in point: I’ve had a pan “soaking” for three hours and I was hungry two hours ago but I’m just now sitting down to a sandwich it took me two minutes to make. You might want to get your own drink today or we might be here for a while, but i think I can manage conversation.

This week has been about enjoying the little things like flush toilets, air conditioning, and kitchen sinks.

Last Friday night the wax seal in our downstairs bathroom gave out, and while it’s something I could replace, its also something I pay into every month to have someone else take care of – so I put in a maintenance ticket and waited.

And waited.

And waited.

Monday and Tuesday came and went and I wondered when they were coming because everything looked like I left it each day and I had no clue if maintenance came or not.

On Wednesday I decided to actually check and see and things worked like they should. I don’t want to think about the time I spent frustrated when I should not have been.

And with that, I decided it was time to submit a ticket for our AC. I did that on Thursday and Thursday evening came back to a cool(er) house.

With outside temperatures now getting up into the low 90s, it’s appreciated.

But the saga somewhat continues in that now, about every twelve hours or so, the screen on the thermostat “resets” – not from hot/cold or the temperature setting, but the settings for the date time.

If that’s the trade off for cool air, I’ll make that deal.

Then on Friday night I was cleaning in the kitchen and went to do dishes in the sink and the sink stopper broke, making it impossible to actually plug the sink. I was washing my large stock pot so I just ran the water in there instead and was able to wash everything but a frying pan.

I went out and bought a sink stopper the next morning.

Hmm . . . let’s see . . .

You might remember the brownies I made off the cuff last week for a party. Well, they went over so well that not only were they entirely eaten, but a “fight” broke out over the last one – the end result being the brownie was split in two between the “combatants” and since then no less than three people have asked for the recipe.

Take one box of brownie mix

• Substitute melted butter for oil

• Substitute brewed coffee for water

• Add one extra egg yolk

Mix and pour into pan

Place small spoonfuls (about a teaspoon in size but no larger than half a tablespoon) of raspberry jam in even dollops across the batter

Using toothpicks, gently swirl the jam into the batter

Bake according to the instructions

On Wednesday we went out to eat at Applebees and our server came up and said “good evening ladies, how are we tonight?” and I melted and my brain shut off from the sudden joy because sometimes I (as a nonbinary person) just need/want to be perceived as something other than their “default”

Couldn’t tell me nothin’ the rest of the night – both because I was so euphoric and simultaneously so tired that when we got home I went to bed immediately.

We had an appetizer of pretzels and then I had a cheeseburger where the burger it cut in half and put cut-side-down in melted cheese in a skillet.

The college library had a craft table this week encouraging folks to make blackout poetry.

If you don’t know, blackout poetry is when you take a page of text and literally black out words until you’re left with a thought or idea you wish to convey.

Here’s something I was able to do:

and if you’re having trouble reading the poem, here’s the text I left behind:

the inner uninterrupted thought
space for one breath
all the rest is something you witness
the body is brief
the end unnaturally shallow

ancient spirit formed of dust
a living creature
the divine within reasons awareness
generating consciousness

(Just in case you were wondering, I had to take a break at this point because i dropped tuna fish all over my keyboard at this point)

I tried my hand at dehydrating oranges for s tea blend I’ve been working on (it tastes very much like a botanical-forward gin without the alcohol but based on my attempts needs some citrus to brighten it up)

Last night was the fifth annual vaudeville show at the local theatre (which began as a vaudeville stage over 100 years ago!) and for the fifth year in a row Krystal was the stage manager. I heard so many people familiar with the back of house work talk about how good she is at managing shows and how infectiously positive she is and how everyone wants to spend more time around her and I am SO PROUD

Okay so here we are: I made it through and actually finished bringing you up to speed, so now it’s your turn:

How are you?

What have you been up to?
