Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, 2016

Yesterday was the 75th anniversary of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, an event which brought the United States into World War II. One of the men serving at Pearl on that day was my friend and “adopted grandfather” Chief (ret) Tom Poole, stationed on the North Carolina. He turned 98 earlier this year, and yesterday was honored at Tryon Palace.

There were photographers and news cameras, and when I asked him what he thought about all the excitement and attention, Mr. Tom replied

You’d have thought I was Marilyn Monroe!

You can see the news report on him here and see more photos of the event here.

  1. Your 98 year old friend has a terrific sense of humor. Thanks for passing this on. I love the picture of the magnolia seed. I don’t know exactly what its proper name is but many fell from the magnolia tree in my backyard in Mississippi.
