Old Books Deserve New Life

Intro to Scientific German 1935

Normally, I’d be writing a post based on a submission from the prompt box or something I’ve read on another awesome blog.

This is not a normal day.

You see, I was gifted a box or two stuffed with old books.

Old, wonderful books.

Old, wonderful, fantastic books.

Books that have outlived their usefulness.

Books without sentimental or intrinsic value.

Books that deserve better than an unceremonious trip to the dump.

So I ask, what can I do with these books?

The internet tells me I should make some sort of box or wall art.

A few sites suggested covering walls or furniture with “favorite pages”.

Trust me, I wouldn’t be disassembling my favorite books.

I’m not exactly creative when it comes to crafting or the visual arts.

I can see things in my head; my hands won’t cooperate.

However, I used to think that about writing; I’d like to think I’ve honed some skills over the past few years.

I need a nice, easy, simple project using old books or the pages of old books.

What would you suggest?

In case you’re wondering:

No, I will not be using Introduction to Scientific German.

First of all, it was a gift from my brother.

Second of all, it’s much too nice to cut apart.

Wicked Word Wednesday No. 1

Blogging 201 challenged me to create a blogging event.

So, it is with greatest pride and deepest pleasure that I present to you

Wicked Word Wednesday Logo 3As this is the inaugural Wicked Word Wednesday, I’ll take some time to explain the rules. If you’ve already read the rules, feel free to jump to today’s Wicked Word.

Each Wednesday, I reveal a new Wicked Word.

I choose the Wicked Word based on a few mathematical algorithms and the New American Heritage College Dictionary.

Then, it’s up to you to compose a post around that word.

Be creative with your poetry, prose, or photography.

Who:

! YOU !

What:

Create something that will move and inspire!

I welcome all forms of prose, poetry, and photography; however, please avoid graphic/excessive profanity or overtly disturbing mental images.

Use common sense: what would you want children reading or viewing?

One entry per person regardless of category.

Where:

Post your entry on your own blog.

Please link back to the current challenge

Post a link to your entry in the comment box of the current week’s  prompt post.

From the home page, click on the current Wicked Word Wednesday.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and enter your link in the comment box.

Indicate which category your post falls into (Prose, Poetry, Photography)

Include your Twitter handle if you have one.

No social media?

Leave a name or nom de plume so I can give praise if you’re a winner.

When:

A prompt will post on the home page of this blog on Tuesdays at midnight (Eastern Time).

You will have until midnight (Eastern Time) on Wednesday to link your entry in the comment section.

Any entries time stamped after midnight on Wednesday of that week will not be eligible.

For sake of clarity, I am on New York Time.

Still confused? Check the World Clock!

Winners are announced Saturday or Sunday here on the blog as well as on Twitter and Facebook.

Why:

Get those creative juices flowing.

Read other blogs and comment. I hope to grow a Wicked Word Wednesday community.

Furthermore, most everyone enjoys feedback!

The life of an artist can become cloistered and lonely without a network of positive creative types.

Invite others to join in. This is for fun, creative inspiration, and a great way to connect with other creative types.

Did I mention you get bragging rights and a cool badge to post on your site (or original blog post) if you are a winner?

Teaser Tuesday: Food (A Love Story)

Well, I’m back working in my classroom preparing it for another school year.

Inexorably, the Wheel of Time has turned to

Teaser TuesdayJust in case you don’t know, Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is grab the book you’re currently reading, open to a random page and share a few sentences from that page. But make sure you don’t share any spoilers!*

*I wish I could take credit for this introduction, but I shamelessly stole it from Heather over at bitsnbooks. To help me make amends, you should go check out her blog.

This week I’m reading Food: A Love Story by comedian Jim Gaffigan

The Truly Random Number Generator sends us to page 12:

I don't mean to brag or anything, but I'm
preparing for a very big role. Sure, it's a
cinnamon roll, but I don't want to look like I
can't finish it.

In Retrospect

I’m about halfway through The Greatest Knight: The Remarkable Life of William Marshal, The Power Behind Five English Thrones by Thomas Asbridge.[Don’t believe my progress updates via Goodreads; the last 60 pages or so consist of family trees, glossaries, and an index.]

Monday Morning Grievance: Oversleeping

It’s Monday and I haven’t had my coffee.

Monday Morning Grievances Logo 1

I overslept today.

I had such good intentions, too.

I was going to get up and write this blog post.

Then, I’d make some coffee and read for a bit.

After that, I’d go pay some bills.

All before heading out to the school to start organizing my classroom for next term, which starts in two weeks.

Now, though, I’ve overslept by an hour and a half.

I can’t procrastinate on the bills.

I shouldn’t put off working in my classroom.

I’ve got to have my coffee if I’m going to be halfway pleasant today.

The real question is

Do I have time to read, or must I wait ’til tonight?

What annoys you?
